South Coast
Iceland’s Most Iconic Road Trip Route
The South Coast of Iceland is one of the most spectacular and accessible regions in the country. Stretching from Reykjavík toward the east, this coastline is packed with some of Iceland’s most famous landscapes, making it a must-see part of almost every trip.
Here you’ll find powerful waterfalls, black sand beaches, massive glaciers, volcanic landscapes, and dramatic cliffs, often all within a short drive of each other. Places like Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon are just a few of the highlights that make this region so unforgettable.

Our Local Advice
The South Coast works best when you give it enough time. Many people rush through it in a single long day, but we strongly recommend at least two days if you want to enjoy it properly and avoid spending the whole trip in the car.
Start early, take your time at each stop, and don’t try to see everything in one go. Some of the best moments happen between the big attractions, when you stop at a quiet viewpoint, walk along an empty beach, or simply enjoy the changing light on the glaciers.
If you’re continuing east toward Jökulsárlón or around the Ring Road, the South Coast becomes one of the most scenic stretches of your entire journey and a perfect transition from the busy southwest into Iceland’s more remote regions.

Your questions answered
Common questions

How long do I need to explore the South Coast?
To experience the South Coast properly, we recommend at least two days. While it is possible to drive part of it in one long day, that usually feels rushed and leaves little time to enjoy the places you stop at. Two or more days lets you explore waterfalls, beaches, glaciers, and lagoons at a relaxed pace.
Can I drive the South Coast with a normal car?
Yes, the main South Coast route follows the Ring Road and is fully paved and accessible with a normal two-wheel-drive car in most conditions. However, in winter you should always check weather and road conditions, and some side roads or viewpoints may require extra caution or a 4×4.
What are the must-see places on the South Coast?
Some of the most famous highlights include Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the black sand beach at Reynisfjara, the village of Vík, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Beyond these, there are many smaller stops, viewpoints, and hidden spots that make the journey even more special.
Is the South Coast crowded?
The South Coast is one of the most popular regions in Iceland, especially in summer. The main attractions can be busy during midday, but it is easy to avoid most crowds by starting early, visiting in the evening, or stopping at lesser-known places along the way. A good plan and timing make a big difference.
